From space to Earth. Tiny light-emitting diode chips from space unexpectedly lighted the way for anti-aging, wound healing, and chronic pain alleviation on Earth. It was NASA that moved forward the science of light therapy after one amazing discovery that proved that red light exposure could get plants to grow in outer space. That prompted to conduct more studies to investigate medical applications of light exposure and specifically how LEDs could transfer energy to human cells.
“NASA subsequently identified another need that could be addressed with the use of LEDs: astronaut health. A central concern in astronaut health is maintaining healthy growth of cells, including preventing bone and muscle loss and boosting the body’s ability to heal wounds—all adversely affected by prolonged weightlessness. Thus, having determined that LEDs can be used to grow plants in space, NASA decided to investigate whether LEDs might be used for photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT).” — NASA Press Release
“NASA scientists have found that cells exposed to near-infrared light from LEDs, which is energy just outside the visible range, grow 150 to 200 percent faster than cells not stimulated by such light. The light arrays increase energy (ATP and nitric oxide) that speed up the healing process.”— NASA LED Technology Press Release
While NASA mainly focused it’s study on limiting the loss of bone density and muscle tissue for astronauts, the results of the study were groundbreaking, and instantly sprouted other clinical studies outside of NASA. Scientists were able to take a space technology and adapt it for an entirely different application to significantly help people on Earth.
“This technology has been used by physicians, NASA, Navy Seals for muscle regeneration and healing of wounds. The Navy Seals’ program found the return-to-service rate was 41% faster with LEDs [LED light therapy]. Additionally, many institutions such as John Hopkins, Stanford, and the Mayo Clinic have studied and used LEDs for various healing benefits.” — NASA LED Technology Press Release
Medical schools started to research the effects of Light Therapy extensively. It was found that the tissue was not only healing but superficial cosmetic conditions were improving as well. A wide range of clinically-documented health and anti-aging benefits (thousands scientific studies and counting!) have been published and confirmed. The research on red light therapy benefits has continued and the results are exceeding anyone’s expectations.
